(HealthDay News) — Along with calculating your body-mass index, measuring your waist is a good way to determine if you’re at a healthy weight.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explains how to measure your waist:

  • Wrap a measuring tape around your abdomen, making sure the tape is parallel to the floor.
  • Measure your bare abdomen, placing the tape just above your hip bone.
  • Fit the measuring tape so it fits snugly without pushing into your skin.
  • Exhale and relax, and take the measurement.
