While consumption of grapes and grape products has long been associated with a healthy lifestyle, a new supplement published in the September issue of the Journal of Nutrition provides further evidence that grapes and grape products may play a key role in optimizing health by mediating beneficial biological responses. The vast array of naturally occurring plant chemicals in grapes and grape products are thought to be responsible for the beneficial effects observed. The potential areas of beneficial impact include cardiovascular health, cognitive function in older people, cancer, inflammation, diabetes, and dental health.

The current Journal of Nutrition supplement highlights key presentations made at a meeting of researchers from academia and advisory members from government, who gathered together earlier this year to present and discuss research on the links between consumption of grapes and grape products, diet and health, and disease prevention. The workshop was sponsored by the National Grape and Wine Initiative (NGWI).

“Within grapes and grape products, there are chemical classes of natural compounds which are capable of mediating biological responses against a variety of targets,” said Dr. John Pezzuto, Dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Hawaii Hilo, who moderated the Grape and Health Workshop. “In considering grapes and health, a broader view – that takes into account all of the grape’s chemical components including their metabolism, biological potential, biodistribution, absorption and processing – is key to developing a comprehensive and coherent explanation of their role in improving and supporting human health.” Pezzuto outlines an innovative approach for achieving this in his contribution to the supplement.

Consuming grapes and grape products may be an effective and inexpensive way for consumers to prevent such diseases as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and tooth decay while improving the immune functions and increasing cognitive and motor functions among older people.

A Natural Anti-Aging Wonder

Over the course of this 30-week study, researchers had two major goals: to evaluate the short-term effect that this powerful compound would have on DNA damage and to evaluate the long-term effect it would have on membrane lipid peroxidation (the process by which free radicals cause damage to cell membranes). In addition, the researchers measured the levels of circulating antioxidants.

The results? Rats supplemented with trans-resveratrol showed significantly less white blood cell damage than those that received DHM alone. What’s more, those that received trans-resveratrol for the full 30 weeks also showed a marked increase in several key antioxidant enzymes-including superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione reductase-along with other antioxidant factors like vitamin C, vitamin E and beta-carotene. Finally, this group of rats also showed a noticeable decrease in markers of dangerous lipid peroxidation.1

In the end, the study authors’ conclusion couldn’t be more clear-or promising, for that matter-stating "results indicate that DMH-induced DNA damage and oxidative stress were suppressed/prevented effectively by chronic resveratrol supplementation."

Cholesterol Lowering Diet

The so-called Ape Man Diet (primarily vegan, as demonstrated by what gorillas eat) has been shown to lower cholesterol as effectively as any statin. If you cannot fancy yourself as an ape, at least consume two or more servings of each of the following proven cholesterol lowering foods every day:

  • Organic fermented soy products such as tempeh and miso contain saponins, which prevent the absorption of excess cholesterol from the gastrointestinal tract.
  • High pectin fruits such as pears, apples, grapefruit and oranges also prevent cholesterol absorption. And drinking pomegranate juice lowers cholesterol because of its antioxidants and polyphenols.
  • Garlic, onions, carrots, walnuts, almonds, oat bran cereal, milled (ground) flax seed, and seaweed products such as kelp, dulse and kombu lower cholesterol via their content of fiber, antioxidants and trace minerals.

Cholesterol Lowering Supplements

Cholesterol lowering with most of these natural remedies can take three months or longer to achieve. But unlike drugs, side effects of such products are minimal.

  • Soluble fibers – such as psyllium, guar gum and pectin (15 grams or more daily).

  • Tocotrienols – 600 mgs or more daily – a form of vitamin E originating from rice bran oil which blocks the cholesterol synthesizing enzyme in the liver. Most vitamin E complex formulae include tocotrienols as part of the complex.
  • Vitamin C – 3000 to 6000 mgs – lowers cholesterol, regenerates and reactivates vitamin E. Vitamin C protects the body from oxidant stress, thereby lowering cholesterol.
  • Beta Sitosterol – (500 mg daily) More than 50 human and animal studies published in scientific journals since the 1960s show that beta-sitosterol has a powerful hypocholesterolemic effect in humans. It has a similar chemical structure to cholesterol. Beta-sitosterol interferes with cholesterol absorption, which prevents the rise in serum cholesterol. In one study (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition) there was a 42% decrease in cholesterol absorbed when taking beta-sitosterol before eating scrambled eggs. Beta-sitosterol is also believed to reduce serum cholesterol by inhibiting the intestinal re-absorption of circulating cholesterol, which is secreted in the bile.
  • Berberine – 1000 mg three times daily – an extract of several herbs used for their antibiotic properties, plus cholesterol- and triglyceride-lowering ability. It also has antioxidant benefits.
  • Artichoke leaf extract – 1000 mg three times daily – works to enhance bile acid production by the liver from cholesterol.
  • Guggulsterones – 1000 mg daily – a resin from the Guggul tree with antioxidant properties; also able to lower cholesterol by regulating bile metabolism.
  • Green tea extract (Theaflavin) – 500 mg three times daily – a polyphenol derived from catechins found in green tea that has both cholesterol-lowering and antioxidant effects.

The cold and flu season we are facing this year will likely be unlike any other we have experienced in this lifetime. As September begins and children return to school and university classes, the threat of contracting a virus increases.

Children bring home from school more than just homework, since schools act as "amplifying sites" for the spread of infectious diseases, outbreaks, and pandemics.1 In one trial conducted between November 1, 2001 and April 30, 2002, researchers studied 3,771 children less than 14 years of age with no chronic medical conditions who presented with respiratory tract infections.2 Nasopharyngeal swabs were collected for the isolation of influenza viruses and viral RNA detection. Information was also collected concerning respiratory illnesses and related morbidities among the study children and their household contacts. Influenza virus was demonstrated in 352 cases. One of the findings of the study was that in comparison with the influenza negative children, those who were influenza positive were more often attending day care centers or schools. Furthermore, their parents and siblings had more respiratory illnesses, received more antipyretics and antibiotics, needed more medical visits, missed more work or school days, and needed help at home to care for the ill children for a longer period of time.

Other studies have looked at the antiviral activity of Cordyceps sinensis, one of the most valued Chinese medicinal mushrooms. In 25 patients with chronic hepatitis B, 3 months of using Cordyceps resulted in an improvement in immunity as indicated by the fact that CD4 and CD4/CD8 ratio increased significantly compared with the controls.6

Animal studies also have shown that Cordyceps can regulate cellular immunity, enhance production of spleen lymphocytes and increase production of IL-2 from splenocytes. IL-2 (interleukin-2) is a cytokine, a protein released by white blood cells, which plays an important role in immunity by enhancing natural killer cell function and the production of T cells.7

Ganoderma lucidum extract, known as Reishi mushroom, was found to increase the immune responses of patients with advanced stage cancer and to significantly increase the mean natural killer cell activity compared to baseline along with improving other aspects of immunity.8

Subjects received either daily supplements of EpiCor (500 mg) or a placebo. The scientists collected data on the subjects at the study's start and after six and 12 weeks.

The researchers found that the subjects given EpiCor experienced significantly fewer cold and flu symptoms and significantly shorter duration of symptoms, compared to subjects taking the placebo. Among the 116 study participants, those who did have symptoms experienced a reduction in the duration of symptoms by 14 percent after taking EpiCor. The overall occurrence of cold and flu symptoms was reduced by 21 percent in the EpiCor group.25

Ingredients in Grape extract Boosts Alzheimer’s Protection and much more

The polyphenols found in red wine are thought to help prevent Alzheimer’s disease, and new research from Purdue University and Mount Sinai School of Medicine has shown that some of those compounds in fact reach the brain.

Mario Ferruzzi, a Purdue associate professor of food science; Connie Weaver, Purdue’s head of foods and nutrition; and Elsa Janle, a Purdue associate professor of foods and nutrition, found that the amount of polyphenols from grapeseed extract that can reach a rat’s brain is as much as 200 percent higher on the 10th consecutive day of feeding as compared to the first. Many previous experiments, in which absorption was measured after single or sporadic doses, often found very little, if any, of the bioactive polyphenols reaching brain tissues. However, more chronic exposure appears to improve absorption.

"This shows that reasonable and chronic consumption of these products may be the way to go, rather than single, high doses, similar to drugs," said Ferruzzi, who collaborated on the research with Mount Sinai’s Dr. Giulio Pasinetti. "It’s like eating an apple a day, not a case of apples over two days every month."

A paper detailing the findings was published in the early online version of the September issue of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Polyphenols, compounds found in the skins and seeds of grapes, are thought to prevent the formation of beta-amyloid protein, which creates the plaque in the brain that causes Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s is a progressive brain disease that destroys memory and cognitive skills and affects as many as 4.5 million Americans, according to the National Institute on Aging.

Pasinetti, the Aidekman Family Professor in Neurology and director of the Center of Excellence for Novel Approaches to Neurotherapeutics, said discovering how polyphenols are absorbed and distributed to the brain can impact researchers’ understanding of the amount of grape products or red wine a person would need to consume to most effectively combat Alzheimer’s disease.

"The most important thing is that when we follow the repetitive administration of this compound, we were able to observe the transfer of the compound to the brain," Pasinetti said. "This may help us figure out the proper concentration necessary to get these chemicals to the brain."

Ferruzzi said the study dealt with polyphenols, but also could be important for determining proper doses of other compounds or drugs for patients. Testing of a pharmaceutical, for example, could show that the drug is too potent when given repetitively; whereas that might not be apparent if the drug is administered on non-consecutive days or weeks.

"It could become important in terms of side effects," Ferruzzi said. "You could be overdosing because the body is adapting and absorbing or metabolizing these compounds differently over time."

Pasinetti is the principal investigator for the Center of Excellence for Research and Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Alzheimer’s Disease grant from the National Institutes of Health that funded the work. Ferruzzi said further studies will focus on the mechanisms that control absorption of compounds during chronic consumption.

Worried About Your Waistline? Get More – Not Less – of This Saturated Fat

If you’re trying to shrink your bulging waistline, you’ve probably been cutting fats-and especially those notoriously heart-harming saturated fats-from your diet every chance you get. But believe it or not, this is one piece of "common sense" you may want to reconsider.

As it turns out, recent research is flying in the face of that age-old wisdom…at least where one natural source of saturated fat is concerned.

A new study examined the effects of coconut oil supplementation on women with abdominal obesity-that is, a waist circumference greater than 34 ½ inches-one of the leading risk factors in both heart disease and diabetes. Researchers followed 40 subjects between the ages of –half receiving 30 mL of coconut oil per day and half receiving 30 mL of soybean oil-over the course of 12-weeks.1

The study participants were instructed to follow a balanced low-calorie diet and to walk for 50 minutes per day. Lipid levels-including total cholesterol and HDL/LDL cholesterol ratios-were evaluated at both the beginning and end of the trial.

After 12 weeks, results showed that carbohydrate and overall caloric intake-as well as body mass index (BMI) measurements-decreased in both groups. But only the subjects taking coconut oil ended up with smaller waistlines-not to mention increased HDL (that is, "good" cholesterol) levels and an improved LDL to HDL ratio.

The patients taking soybean oil, on the other hand, weren’t so lucky. Not only did the total cholesterol levels increase in this group, but LDL ("bad" cholesterol) levels did as well. Health-boosting levels of HDL, however, did drop-resulting in a higher LDL to HDL ratio, and the increased heart risk that comes with it.

The study authors’ conclusion? Saturated fat or not, coconut oil doesn’t negatively impact your cholesterol levels. It does, however, appear to fight belly fat… a benefit that reaches well beyond a closet full of smaller clothes.

The majority of Britons are unaware a diet rich in seafood can dramatically slash the risk of suffering a heart attack, according to a survey by Seafish, the authority on seafood in the UK.

A poll of 2,012 people from across the UK found 53% of respondents did not know that a diet rich in seafood reduces the chances of suffering a heart attack.

Recent research by US academics found compelling evidence that eating oily fish could reduce heart attack deaths without the need for extra medication. It is estimated that each year 200,000 people in the UK die from heart disease and around 275,000 Britons suffer heart attacks.

The Seafish research was commissioned as part of a drive by the industry body to highlight the health benefits of seafood which includes a booklet, The Healthy Guide to Buying, Preparing, Cooking and Sourcing Seafood.

In addition, a series of new guides offering tips and advice, including recipes, on how to cook seafood, will target mums, mums-to-be, the over 50s and young people. The guides will be sent to all independent fishmongers across the UK.

Seafish has also launched a Facebook seafood2aweek page to encourage consumers to eat two portions of seafood a week as recommended by the Food Standards Agency. The social networking page is now being followed by almost 1,000 people.

Independent nutritionist Juliette Kellow said: “There are a number of studies that show omega-3 fats, found naturally in oil-rich fish such as mackerel, sardines, herrings, fresh tuna, salmon and trout, can reduce our chances of heart disease. According to the British Heart Foundation, these unique polyunsaturated fats help to prevent blood clots from forming, lower levels of a type of fat found in the blood called triglycerides and regulate heart rhythm.

“And being healthy needn’t cost the earth. Seafood is the best natural source of complex omega-3 fats and contains protein and a variety of vitamins and minerals, making it, great value for money.”

Karen Galloway, market insight manager at Seafish, said: “The results of the survey certainly do make for interesting reading. Seafood is in abundance in the UK and it is easy to prepare tasty dishes that will ensure people get the two portions of seafood a week which will help them stave off heart disease.

“The new Seafish guides offer tips and advice on how to cook seafood as well as providing simple recipes that will enable people to enjoy one of the healthiest food sources we have in the UK.”

The survey was conducted by researchers Opinium Research. It also found that:

–57% of those polled agreed eating seafood as part of a calorie controlled diet can help lose weight;

–60% of those surveyed agreed that, due to seafood’s high Omega-3 fatty acid content, can help aid concentration if you eat two or more portions a week;

–58% of women believe that during pregnancy they should eat two portions of fish a week, one of which should be oily fish.

–More than eight out of ten Britons – 83% – described seafood as healthy.

Type 2 Diabetics Concerned About Complications

Survey Sheds Light on Patients’ Concerns About Life-Threatening Complications

As the prevalence of Type 2 diabetes continues to rise significantly, with over 125,000 new cases diagnosed a year(1), new survey results show that those affected are now realising the wider implications of the condition and the fear associated with its complications. While people increasingly recognise that the condition is strongly linked to lifestyle factors such as a poor diet and lack of physical activity, the results highlight that it is not just those already diagnosed who could be affected, but that loved ones could also be impacted by the complications.

According to results from a survey(2) of over 2,500 people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, conducted by Diabetes UK and sponsored by Merck Sharp and Dohme Limited, it was revealed that:

– eight out of ten people surveyed are either very concerned or fairly concerned about having a heart attack, stroke or nerve damage

– almost 50 per cent said they were very concerned or fairly concerned about experiencing hypoglycaemia (low blood glucose), with nearly a third having experienced it

– almost a quarter have experienced sexual dysfunction

– almost one in ten respondents stated they have suffered eye damage

– 8 per cent of people surveyed have cardiovascular disease

Dr Marc Evans, Consultant Diabetologist, Cardiff, said: “These results illustrate the everyday challenge facing those living with Type 2 diabetes. If not managed correctly, this condition has wide reaching, long-term implications. As part of the effort to control blood glucose levels which could potentially reduce the risk of complications, people also face the challenge of ensuring their glucose levels don’t drop too low, causing hypoglycaemia. This can be a very frightening experience for patients who become unwell, feeling disorientated or dizzy. Unfortunately however, this may go unreported to their GP through fear of the impact it may have on things like insurance, driving licence or their job.”

In addition to highlighting the other serious complications, the survey also revealed the issues that impact on everyday life, which may also affect loved ones. Nearly a quarter of the respondents (both men and women) reported having suffered sexual dysfunction. The considerable impact of this complication was clearly highlighted in a comment from one respondent who stated: “I haven’t had any form of sex life with my husband for over two years; which coincides with my taking my meds. My doctor’s response is that I obviously do not love my husband any more! I am so angry that female sexual dysfunction is not acknowledged and more help given.”

Type 2 diabetes is treated with lifestyle changes such as a healthier diet, weight loss where appropriate and increased physical activity. Blood glucose lowering medication may also be required to achieve normal blood glucose levels, which are essential in protecting against long-term damage to the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and major arteries. However, 20 per cent of those surveyed were not aware of what their target blood glucose levels should be, and almost 40 per cent of respondents were not aware of what HbA1c levels were – a long-term measure of how well blood glucose is controlled.

Diabetes UK Care Advisor Caroline Butler said: “It’s essential that everyone with diabetes works in partnership with their healthcare team to help manage their condition effectively.

“This means it’s crucial they are able to access the information and support they need with ease so that they can manage their condition effectively, and thereby reduce the risk of developing devastating complications.”

About Diabetes

Diabetes is a common life-long condition where the amount of glucose in the blood is too high as the body cannot use it properly. This is because the pancreas does not produce any or not enough insulin or the insulin that is produced doesn’t work properly (known as insulin resistance). Insulin helps glucose enter the body’s cells, where it is used for energy.

Glucose comes from digesting carbohydrate from various kinds of food and drink, including starchy foods such as breads, rice and potatoes, fruit, some dairy products, sugar and other sweet foods. Glucose is also produced by the liver.

There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes develops when the insulin-producing cells have been destroyed and the body is unable to produce any insulin. The main symptoms of undiagnosed diabetes include passing urine frequently (especially at night), increased thirst, extreme tiredness, unexplained weight loss, genital itching or regular episodes of thrush, slow healing of wounds and blurred vision.

The main aim of diabetes treatment is to achieve blood glucose, blood pressure and blood fat levels (including cholesterol) within the target ranges agreed by you and your healthcare team. This, together with a healthy lifestyle, will reduce the risk of developing the long-term complications of diabetes such as heart attack, stroke, amputation, blindness, kidney failure and nerve damage.
