In actual fact a large portion of the adult population is infected with one or other of the Herpes viruses yet never display any symptoms. Others seem prone to frequent recurrences. Different things may trigger an outbreak - sunshine, generally being run down, a bout of a bad cold, overwork, stress, worry and other emotional factors. The Study (Evaluation of 2LHERP in preventing recurrences of genital herpes) in Layman�s terms! The Doctors Basically the study was carried out by a group of doctors in general practice (multi centre) in Belgium and France. This is important for two reasons: 1. There were 15 doctors all in different practices in different places and not an individual which means that no individual person has influenced the results. 2. In the UK most cases of Herpes would be seen by a GUM clinic doctor and GP�s in general practice have very varied experience and knowledge of Herpes. However this trial was done in Belgium and France where most cases of Herpes would be seen by the local GP, they do have experience in dealing with it and treating it. This is particularly important for the follow-up. Many people who get it in the UK do not go back to the GUM clinics afterwards and do not visit their GP either so it is very difficult to collect information in the long term. In this study as the treating doctors were the local GPs, the patients kept in contact with them and the results could be assessed over a long period of time. The Patients 53 patients took part, all aged over 18 and they had a minimum of 4 obs a year. There were 12 men and 41 women. All cases were Genital H but it didn�t matter whether it was HSV1 or HSV 2 that caused the problem, both were treated the same. Some patients were on anti-virals but were still getting 4 or more obs a year. These people continued the anti-virals as well as taking the 2LHERP. The Study Patients filled in a detailed questionnaire which covered things like how long they�d had it, how many times they got obs, how long they went between obs, any treatments they�d used in the past, both conventional and alternative, as well as any adverse effects from previous treatments. The aim of the study was to see how the treatment affected the number of obs patients had, the time they could go between obs and whether the obs were milder or not. They did not try to prove that they could cure herpes. The treatment. Treatment was always started at the end of an ob (this is important because it set a definite point from which they could measure how long people went between obs due to the treatment! Treatment was given for a minimum of 2 months, 1 capsule per day. The Results Two patients did not go back to the doctor for a follow-up and two patients did not have all of the doctors notes so they were rejected, which left 49 patients but they still calculated the results on a group of 53 as is correct in a proper controlled study. They split the results into 3 groups that they called �good� response to treatment, �satisfactory� response to treatment and �poor� response to treatment. The Good Group 22 patients had no obs after starting the treatment. The background was different for these patients, some had been having obs constantly and some had only been having 4 obs a year. So basically it wasn�t a case of the people who only had 4 obs a year benefited, patients who had constant problems also benefited. This is 41% of the whole group in the study. The amount of time that the patients had to take the treatment was different depending on their particular case. Two patients took the treatment constantly for 18 months. 3 patients took it for between 6 and 12 months but the largest number of this group (17) took the treatment for between 2 and 4 months. The Satisfactory Group 22 patients (41%) had satisfactory results. 17 of these patients (32% of all patients) had some obs either whilst they were taking the treatment or after they has stopped treatment but then went into a long period of no obs. The other 5 patients in this group didn�t get to the point of no obs at all but they had them much less often and they were not nearly as bad as they had been before. In this group 4 patients took the treatment constantly for 10 to 18 months, the others took it for between 2 and 18 months with an average of 7 months treatment. The Poor Group Five patients out of the 53 (9%) had a poor response to treatment. They did not really have any change in the number of obs they had. Two of these people had been on anti-virals before and one of them it did not help and the other was intolerant to it. Conclusion 82% of patients in the study benefited with the 2LHERP treatment (the �good� and �satisfactory� groups). The remaining �poor� group may benefit if they take more capsules per day (2 -3) but this needs to be done as a further study. Comments The full study can be found in the British Homeopathic Journal (2000) 89, pages 174-177 There are lots of details about the length of time that patients managed to go with no obs and the best that anybody managed appears to be 50 months.
